Terry Katz is the Chief Executive Officer of Platinum Labs. Known as a straight shooter, problem solver and tough negotiator, he’s unafraid of long days, hard work and the challenge of the entrepreneurial life. He’s also a father of two.
Terry knows firsthand the value of hard work, grit and determination. Raised by his mother in Perth, he spent his formative years dreaming of success and planning how to get there. He entered the workforce as a Driller’s Offsider and committed to upskilling himself, quickly rising through the ranks to be the youngest senior supervisor in his company at age 25.
Despite being constantly headhunted by competitors, Terry’s loyalty and work ethic drove him to continue excelling under the organization that he was already a member of until a faulty drill rig crushed a finger and recovery sidelined him for months. During this time he reconsidered the direction in which he was heading, and realised that it was time to embrace being a father.
Having been passionate about fitness for some time, a natural progression saw Terry become a Personal Trainer. Despite a significantly lower income, being a family man brought new value into his days. He also had more time to train and embraced bodybuilding with fervour, leading to an expose into the world of supplements. Before long, this love of fitness and a healthy life led him to work for an established supplement company where he learnt as much as he could about the industry.
Having a natural affinity for progression, Terry jumped at the offer of state sales manager for a supplement distributor. Again applying determination and skill he excelled, but pre-existing failings of the company irked him. He began to ask why they distributed instead of manufacturing, and identified a glaring hole in Australian supplement market: there was no market share by Australian supplement companies on the domestic or international stage.
Entrepreneurial aspirations began to dominate his thoughts, and during a tour by an American bodybuilder a network was formed with a businessman with interests in existing supplements. A opportunity was presented, and a few days later Terry, with business partner Matt Low, began Platinum Labs.
Cognisant of the failings of other supplement companies, Terry allowed his obsessive work ethic to take over. Unafraid of working 24 hours a day, he lead by example and enjoyed the challenge of a new venture. Passionate about the creative process, he took pride in the execution of a new idea and watched Platinum Labs claw its way onto the international stage where it now firmly sits, and belongs.
Despite always being ready to talk business, Terry is a family man and loves the time he now has with his son and new baby daughter. He also takes time out of his days to foster dogs and supports any non-profit that re-homes and cares for animals.
It’s clear that Terry’s dreams of success are coming to fruition. Recipient of an honourable mention in the Anthill 30under30 Awards, and Platinum Labs won ‘New Brand of the Year’ at the 2014 Nutrition Warehouse Supplement Awards, his devotion to and passion for business is clear. Despite not being given every opportunity in life, his hunger to exploit any opportunity has given him and his company great success to date. And this is only the beginning.
